Soil amendment with biochar and manure alters wood stake decomposition and fungal community composition

چکیده

Abstract Biochar and manure can be used for sustainable land management. However, little is known about how soil amendments might affect surface belowground microbial processes subsequent wood decomposition. In a split‐split‐split plot design, we amended with two rates of (whole plot; 0 9 Mg ha −1 ) biochar (split 10 ). Wood stakes three species (hybrid poplar, triploid Populus tomentosa Carr.; aspen, tremuloides Michx.; pine, Pinus taeda L.) were placed in positions (horizontally on the surface, inserted vertically mineral soil), which served as substrate fungal growth. 3 years, decomposition rate (density loss), moisture content, community (via high‐throughput sequencing methods) evaluated. Results indicated that and/or increased stake rates, operational taxonomic unit abundance. richness diversity fungi dependent position (surface > mineral), (pine ), sample dates. This study highlights amendment alter community, turn enhance an important process (i.e., decomposition).

Soil biochar amendment in a nature restoration area: effects on plant productivity and community composition.

Biochar (pyrolyzed biomass) amendment to soils has been shown to have a multitude of positive effects, e.g., on crop yield, soil quality, nutrient cycling, and carbon sequestration. So far the majority of studies have focused on agricultural systems, typically with relatively low species diversity and annual cropping schemes. How biochar amendment affects plant communities in more complex and d...

Rat invasion of islands alters fungal community structure, but not wood decomposition rates

Introduced animals can indirectly affect decomposers through trophic cascades and habitat modifications, but whether their effects are strong enough to influence both the structure and function of decomposer communities remains unclear. We conducted an experiment on rat-invaded and rat-free islands off the coast of New Zealand to determine whether introduced rats affected the structure and func...

Chloropicrin Emission Reduction by Soil Amendment with Biochar

Biochar has sorption capacity, and can be used to enhance the sequestration of volatile organic contaminants such as pesticides in soil. Chloropicrin (CP) is an important soil fumigant for the production of many fruit and vegetable crops, but its emissions must be minimized to reduce exposure risks and air pollution. The objective of this study was to determine the capacity of biochar to adsorb...

Effects of biochar amendment on soil aggregates and hydraulic properties

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of biochar amendment on soil aggregate formation and stability, and soil hydraulic properties. Biochar produced from dairy manure was added to two different soils (a silty clay and a sandy loam soil) at a ratio of 2% (w/w in dry weight basis). Incubation experiments were conducted within a 90-d period with the soils (the controls) and the soi...

Hardwood biochar and manure co-application to a calcareous soil.

Biochar may affect the mineralization rate of labile organic C sources such as manures via microbial community shifts, and subsequently affect nutrient release. In order to ascertain the positive or negative priming effect of biochar on manure, dairy manure (2% by wt.) and a hardwood-based, fast pyrolysis biochar were applied (0%, 1%, 2%, and 10% by wt.) to a calcareous soil. Destructive sampli...
